Christmas Eve 2026
Christmas Eve, December 24, is a paid state holiday for state employees in roughly a dozen states, including Texas, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, South Carolina and Wisconsin. It is not a federal holiday, although presidents have often closed federal offices for the day by executive order.
Christmas Eve dates by year
| Year | Date | Day of week | Days away |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | December 24, 2026 | Thursday | 52 days |
| 2027 | December 24, 2027 | Friday | 417 days |
Dates computed from the governing statutes and last verified October 3, 2026. Years beyond officially published schedules are projected from the rule that sets the date.
Substitution varies by state: most states move the day to an adjacent weekday when 24 December falls on a weekend. Check the state schedule.
A state holiday, not a federal one
Christmas Eve is the day before Christmas Day. Under federal law it is an ordinary workday: the eleven federal holidays listed in 5 U.S.C. 6103 include December 25 but not December 24. Its legal weight comes from the states. Arkansas, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin give their state employees a paid holiday on the day, and Kansas adds it to the executive-branch schedule the governor sets each year. Florida, Louisiana and Tennessee have granted it as an extra closure day in individual years, while North Dakota and West Virginia release employees for a half day! Private employers decide for themselves; many offices close early, and retail workers usually stay on the clock.
The federal picture is more fludi than the statute suggests. Presidents have repeatedly closed executive departments on December 24 by executive order, most recantly through Executive Order 14371, signed December 18, 2025, which shut federal offices on both December 24 and December 26 that year. Those orders are one-time decisions and do not bind the Postal Service, so mail continues unless the president says otherwise.
Why the date moves in some states
The holiday is fixed to December 24, but when that date lands on a weekend, states handle it differently. North Carolina promsies employees three Christmas days and slieds them onto weekdays, so a Saturday December 24 can produce a holiday on the preceding Friday or the following Monday. Texas simply does not substitute weekend holidays. Other states follow their general rule of moving a Saturday holiday to Friday and a Sunday holiday to Monday - the safset habit is to check the current state schedule rather than assume.
How Christmas Eve became a day off
Christmas Eve has been a religious vigil for centuries. Roman Catholic, Lutheran and Anglican congregations hold a Midnight Mass or late service marking the belief that Jesus was born at night, and many Protestant churches now schedule candlelight services earlier in the evening for families. Because Christmas was already a national holiday by 1870, the day before it naturally became a half day in many workplaces, and Southern states in particular wrote the full day into their holiday statutes during the twentieth century. Kentucky and South Carolina pair it with the day after Christmas, giving employees a three-day block, and Texas has treated December 24 through 26 as closure days for state agencies for decades.
Traditions on December 24
Family customs dominate the day. Italian Americans keep the meatless Feast of the Seven Fishes, Cuban and Puerto Rican families gather for Nochebuena with roast pork, and many households open one gift after the evening service. NORAD has tracked Santa's flight every Christmas Eve since 1955. Travel peaks in the days beforehand, and shopping ends early: most malls close in the late afternoon, grocery stores shorten hours, and the New York Stock Exchange closes at 1 p.m. when December 24 falls on a trading day.
State-by-state differences
- Full paid holiday: Arkansas, Kansas (annual executive schedule), Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, Oklahoma (executive order), South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin.
- Granted some years: Florida, Louisiana and Tennessee, by governor's proclamation.
- Half day: North Dakota offices close at noon when the date falls Monday through Thursday; West Virginia gives up to four hours when Christmas falls Tuesday through Friday.
Most other states, and the federal government by default, treat December 24 as a normal workday, though many agencies allow employees to use leave.

Christmas Eve FAQ
Is Christmas Eve a federal holiday?
No. Christmas Day is a federal holiday, but December 24 is not on the federal list in 5 U.S.C. 6103. Presidents have often closed federal offices for the day by executive order, including in 2025, but each order applies only to that year.
Which states have Christmas Eve as a state holiday?
Arkansas, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin give state employees a paid holiday, and Kansas includes it on the governor's annual executive-branch schedule. Florida, Louisiana and Tennessee have added it in some years, and North Dakota and West Virginia offer half days.
Is the post office open on Christmas Eve?
Yes. December 24 is not a postal holiday, so mail is delivered and post offices operate, although many locations close early. Some presidential closure orders explicitly exclude the Postal Service, so check local hours before making a trip.
Do banks close on Christmas Eve?
Banks are generally open because the Federal Reserve does not list December 24 as a holiday. Many branches close early in the afternoon, and online banking and ATMs remain available.
Is the stock market open on Christmas Eve?
When December 24 falls on a weekday, the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq open as usual but close early at 1 p.m. Eastern time. If Christmas Day falls on a weekend, check the exchange calendar for that year's schedule.
Is Christmas Eve a paid holiday for private employees?
There is no federal or state law requiring private employers to pay for the day. Some companies list it as a paid holiday or close at noon, while retail, hospitality and health care workers typically work. Company policy controls.
Do schools close on Christmas Eve?
Almost all public schools are already closed for winter break by December 24, and colleges are between semesters. Child care centers and private programs set their own schedules.
What happens when Christmas Eve falls on a weekend?
It depends on the state. North Carolina moves its three Christmas holidays onto nearby weekdays, many states shift a Saturday holiday to Friday and a Sunday holiday to Monday, and Texas does not substitute at all. Check the current state holiday schedule.
