What's open and closed on U.S. holidays
Whether the post office delivers, banks open, the stock market trades and stores keep hours changes from holiday to holiday. Pick a holiday for a service-by-service guide.
The general rules
U.S. Postal Service: closed on all 11 federal holidays; no regular mail delivery (Priority Mail Express still runs). Open on state-only holidays and observances. Banks: follow the Federal Reserve holiday schedule, which matches the federal list; when a holiday falls on a Saturday, banks are open the Friday before. Stock markets: NYSE and Nasdaq close on nine federal holidays plus Good Friday, but trade on Veterans Day and Columbus Day. Federal offices: closed on federal holidays. State offices, courts, DMVs: closed on the state's own list. Schools: district calenders, but nearly all close on federal and state holidays. Retail and restaurants: open on most holidays with reduced hours; Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter are the days most likely to see closures.
