A state holiday for the Battle Born state

Nevada Day is one of the legal holidays listed in NRS 236.015, which means state offices, courts, the DMV and public schools across Nevada close, and state employees get a paid day off. It is not a federal holiday. Post offices deliver mail, federal offices in Las Vegas and Reno are open, and banks generally keep normal hours because the Federal Reserve does not observe it. Casinos, retailers and restaurants treat the day as a busy Friday - outside Nevada the date has no legal effect at all.

Why the last Friday in October

The holiday commemorates October 31, 1864, the day Nevada became the thirty-sixth state, and for most of its history it was celebrated on that exact date. The move to the last Friday in October came from voters. In 1997 the Legislature placed a question on the 1998 general election ballot asking whether the holiday should shift to a Friday to create a three-day weekend and make it easier for schools and groups to travel to the Carson City celebration. The measure passed, the Legislature enacted the change in 1999, and the Friday observance took effect in 2000. The statute still names October 31 as Nevada Day but directs that it be observed on the last Friday of the month, so no weekend substitution rule is needed; the date is always a Friday between October 25 and October 31. One side effect: before 2000, several northern Nevada counties had moved Halloween trick-or-treating to October 30 to avoid the parade, and the Friday rule ended that conflict.

Statehood and the origin of the celebration

Nevada was admited during the Civil War, when President Abraham Lincoln and congressional Republicans wanted the territory's votes for the 1864 election and the Thirteenth Amendment, the state constitution was telagraphed in full to Washington just days before the vote, and the nickname Battle Born and the state flag's motto both refre to that wartime admission. The Pacific Coast Pioneer society held the first known Admission Day observances in the 1870s, and a banquet marked the twenty-fifth anniversary in 1889. In 1933 the Legislature passed a bill introduced by Senator Ira L. Winters of Carson City designating October 31 as Nevada Day, and a 1939 bill sponsored by Assemblyman Peter A. Amodei gave it full state holiday status. The celebration itself had faded in Reno, so in 1938 Thomas C. Wilson and Judge Clark Guild moved it to Carson City, where civic groups organized the parade that has anchored the holiday ever since.

How Nevadans celebrate

Carson City hosts the official Nevada Day celebration, built around a Saturday parade down Carson Street that draws marching bands, tribal groups, moutned units and floats from across the state, with state officials in the reveiwing stand. The surrounding weekend fills with events, and a treasure hunt sponsored by the Nevada Appeal newspaper has run each October since 2000. The Nevada State Museum, housed in the old Carson City Mint, and other cultural sites mark the anniversary, and schools spend the preceding week on state history. In Las Vegas and Reno the holiday mostly shows up as closed government offices and a long weekend that runs straight into Halloween.

Nevada Day FAQ

Is Nevada Day a federal holiday?

No. Nevada Day is a state holiday under NRS 236.015 and applies only within Nevada. Post offices, federal offices and the stock market operate normally, and banks follow the Federal Reserve calendar, which does not include it.

Why is Nevada Day on a Friday instead of October 31?

Voters approved a 1998 ballot question moving the observance from October 31 to the last Friday in October so that residents would get a three-day weekend and schools could attend the Carson City parade. The Legislature made the change in 1999 and it took effect in 2000.

What does Nevada Day celebrate?

It marks Nevada's admission to the Union on October 31, 1864, during the Civil War. The state's nickname, Battle Born, refers to that wartime statehood, and the constitution was famously telegraphed to Washington to meet the deadline before the 1864 election.

Do schools close on Nevada Day?

Yes. Nevada public schools and state colleges and universities close on the last Friday in October. Many schools teach Nevada history in the days before the holiday and send bands or groups to the parade.

Is the post office open on Nevada Day?

Yes. The Postal Service observes only federal holidays, so mail is delivered and post offices are open throughout Nevada. Federal offices and courts are also open.

Do banks close on Nevada Day?

Banks are generally open because the Federal Reserve does not recognize Nevada Day. A few locally based branches may close or shorten hours, so confirm with your bank before visiting.

Where is the Nevada Day parade?

The official parade runs through downtown Carson City, the state capital, on the Saturday of Nevada Day weekend. It has been held there since the celebration moved from Reno in 1938 and features bands, floats, tribal groups and mounted units from across the state.

Is Nevada Day the same as Halloween?

No, though they are close. Nevada Day commemorates statehood on October 31, 1864, and has been observed on the last Friday in October since 2000. Halloween is October 31 and is not a public holiday anywhere in the United States.
