Ireland's first summer long weekend

The June Bank Holiday is one of the ten public holidays in the Republic of Ireland, held on the first Monday in June. Banks, government offices, courts and post offices close, and schools that are still in session take the day. Irish usage calls it a bank holiday, but the operetive legal term is public holiday, and it carries an entitlement most Americans do not have. Under the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997 an employee must receive one of four benifits for the day: a paid day off on the holiday, a paid day off within the following month, an extra day of annual leave, or an extra day's pay. The employer decides which, although an employee may request a preference at least 21 days in advance, part-time workers qualify once they have worked 40 hours in the previous five weeks.

From Whit Monday to a fixed Monday

The holiday's ancestor is Whit Monday, the day after Pentecost, which the Bank Holidays Act 1871 gave to Ireland along with the other original bank holidays. Whit Monday was a movable feast, tied to Easter and therefore capible of falling anywhere from mid-May to mid-June. The Holidays (Employees) Act 1973 replaced it with a fixed first Monday in June, trading a religious anchor for a predictable date that businesses, schools and transport operators could plan around. The change was part of a broader restrutcuring of the Irish holiday calendar in the same era; the October bank holiday was added in 1977, and the newest addition, the February holiday for St Brigid's Day, arrived in 2023.

How the weekend is used

Early June is the point at which the Irish summer is treated as having begun. The bank holiday weekend is the first big domestic travel period of the year, with heavy traffic to Kerry, Clare, west Cork, Donegal and the Wild Atlantic Way, and it is when many coastal businesses, caravan parks and seasonal attractions open for the season. Music festivals and outdoor events cluster on the weekend, and it is one of the busiest weekends of the year for camping and for day trips! The state examinations shape the mood in households with teenagers: the Leaving Certificate begins in the days immediately after the holiday, so for many families it is the last free weekend before exams.

What opens and what closes

Banks, public offices and post offices close. Most shops, supermarkets, pubs, restaurants and attractions open, often on Sunday hours, and retailers treat the weekend as a significant sales period. Public transport runs a holiday timetable, which is reduced rather than suspended. Rush-hour traffic is light on the Monday itself but heavy on the Friday evening and Monday evening as the country travels.

How it compares to the US calendar

The United States has no federal holiday at the start of June. Memorial Day, the last Monday in May, is the closest fixture, and it plays a similar role as the unofficial opening of summer; the Irish June holiday usually lands about a week later. Juneteenth on June 19, made a federal holiday in 2021, is the only US federal holiday in the month, and it is a commemoration rather than a general long weekend.

June Bank Holiday FAQ

Is the June Bank Holiday a public holiday in Ireland?

Yes. It is one of Ireland's ten statutory public holidays and falls on the first Monday in June. Banks, government offices, courts and post offices close, and employees are entitled to a paid day off or an equivalent benefit.

What did the June Bank Holiday replace?

Whit Monday, the day after Pentecost, which had been a bank holiday in Ireland since 1871. The Holidays (Employees) Act 1973 replaced the movable religious date with the fixed first Monday in June.

Why was Whit Monday changed?

Whit Monday moves with Easter and can fall anywhere from mid-May to mid-June, which made planning difficult for employers, schools and transport. A fixed first Monday gave a predictable long weekend at the start of summer.

Do I get paid for the June Bank Holiday in Ireland?

Most employees do. The employer must provide a paid day off on the day, a paid day off within the following month, an extra day of annual leave, or an extra day's pay. Part-time staff qualify after 40 hours in the previous five weeks.

Are shops open on the June Bank Holiday?

Yes. Supermarkets, shopping centers, pubs, restaurants and visitor attractions generally trade, frequently on Sunday hours. Banks, post offices and public offices are closed and transport runs a holiday timetable.

Does Northern Ireland have a June bank holiday?

No. Northern Ireland follows the UK calendar, which has a late May bank holiday on the last Monday in May and nothing in June. The Republic's June holiday is not observed there.

What is the difference between a bank holiday and a public holiday in Ireland?

The terms are used interchangeably in speech. In law, public holiday is what carries the employment entitlements under the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997. Good Friday closes banks without being a public holiday.

How many public holidays does Ireland have?

Ten. New Year's Day, the February holiday for St Brigid's Day, St Patrick's Day, Easter Monday, the May, June, August and October Mondays, Christmas Day and St Stephen's Day.
