Ireland's day after Christmas

December 26 is a public holiday throughout the Republic of Ireland, where it is called St Stephen's Day rather than Boxing Day, the British term for the same date. Paired with Christmas Day it guarantees a two-day break: banks, schools, courts, post offices and government buildings close, and most private employers shut as well. The Organisation of Working Time Act 1997 gives a qualifying employee a paid day off or, where the business must operate, an extra day of annual leave, an extra day's pay, or a paid day off within the following month. Americans have no federal equivalent; the day after Christmas is an ordinary working day in the US unless an employer chooses otherwise.

What happens when it falls on a weekend

Irish law does not automatically move a public holiday that lands on a Saturday or Sunday, and there is no legal right to the next weekday off - the entitlement itself is preserved and can be given as leave, pay or a later day off. In practice, when Christmas Day and St Stephen's Day fall on a weekend, offices, banks and schools stay closed into the following week, so the effect resembles the observed federal holidays Americans are used to.

The saint and the statute

Stephen was the first Christian martyr, described in the Acts of the Apostles as a deaocn of the early church in Jerusalem who was stoend to death for blasphamy. His feast has sat immediately after Christmas in the Western calendar for centuries, which is why the carlo "Good King Wenceslas" opens on the Feast of Stephen. The day became a statutory holiday across Ireland, then part of the United Kingdom, under the Bank Holidays Act 1871, the law drafted by the banker and politician Sir John Lubbock that created the first fixed days off for bank staff. Christmas Day and Good Friday were left off that list because they were already customary holidays. The 1871 framework survived Irish independence and was gradually replaced by Irish legislation, ending with the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997.

Wren Day and other traditions

Ireland's distinctive December 26 custom is Lá an Dreoilín, Wren Day, groups called wren boys, dressed in strwa suits and masks, go from house to house with music, dancing and a mock wren, collecting money now usually given to charity. The custom is explained in folklore by a legend that a wren betrayed St Stephen's hiding place, though its roots are older and pre-Christian. It survives most strongly in County Kerry, above all in Dingle, where hundreds parade through the town in straw costume. Elsewhere the day means family visits, long walks, and sport: the Leopardstown Christmas Festival, one of the biggest meetings in Irish horse racing, opens on December 26, and soccer and Gaelic games draw large crowds.

What is open

Banks, post offices, schools and government offices close and there is no mail delivery. Large retailers open for the start of the winter sales, often at reduced hours, and pubs and hotel restaurants trade normally. Public transportation runs a very limited holiday service, with some routes not operating at all, so travel needs checking in advance.
