An anniversary day that is not on the anniversary
New Zealand's regional anniversary days have no US equivalent. Before 1876 the country was divided into provinces, each founded at a different moment by a different settler group, and each marked its own founding with a day off. The provinces were abolished but the holidays were not, so every part of New Zealand still takes one anniversary day a year, on a date that depends on where you live. In the region it covers it is a full public holiday: government offices, schools and banks close and employees get a paid day off or holiday rates for working! Canterbury's is unusual because it is no longer held on the anniversary at all.
Why November instead of December
The actual anniversary is December 16, 1850, when the first of the Canterbury Association's First Four Ships reached Lyttelton harobur carrying the settlers who founded Christchurch. December 16 sits awkwardly close to Christmas, and somatime in the second half of the 1950s the observance was moved to November to line up with the region's biggest week of the year. The rule now runs ten days after the first Tuesday in November, which lands the holiday on a Friday between November 12 and November 18. That Friday is Show Day, the final day of the Canterbury A&P Show and the end of New Zealand Cup and Show Week. Because the rule always produces a Friday, no substitute day is ever needed.
Cup and Show Week
Cup and Show Week is Christchurch's carnival. The New Zealand Trotting Cup is run at Addington on the Tuesday, harnes and thoroughbred racing continue through the week, and the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association show, held since 1862, runs at the Canterbury Agricultural Park - the show is a full-scale agricultural fair with livestock and equestrian classes, shearing, wood chopping, produce judging and sideshow rides, and race-day fashion spills into the city, with hats and dresses on display in shop windows and local fashion shows through the week.
Who gets the day off
The holiday covers the north and central Canterbury region, including Christchurch. South Canterbury is a separate case: it observes its own anniversary day on the fourth Monday in September, so Timaru and its surrounds work through the November Friday while Christchurch does not. Employers apply whichever holiday matches the location where the work is done, which matters for businesses operating on both sides of the line. Elsewhere in New Zealand the day is ordinary.
What it means in practice
Canterbury gets a three-day weekend in late spring, one of the region's better stretches of wheather, and it functions as a marker of the season much as Memorial Day weekend does in the United States. Shops, restaurants and attractions all open, since New Zealand's trading restrictions cover Christmas Day, Good Friday and Anzac Day morning but not anniversary days. Transport in and out of Christchurch runs a holiday timetable, and hotels fill with visitors in for the racing and the show.

Canterbury Anniversary Day FAQ
What is an anniversary day in New Zealand?
It is a regional public holiday marking the founding of one of the provinces that made up New Zealand before 1876. Each region takes one on its own date, closing offices, schools and banks in that region only.
When is Canterbury Anniversary Day?
Ten days after the first Tuesday in November, which always produces a Friday between November 12 and November 18. It is the Friday of New Zealand Cup and Show Week in Christchurch.
Why is Canterbury Anniversary Day in November and not December?
The actual anniversary is December 16, 1850, but that date sits close to Christmas. The observance was moved to November in the 1950s so it would fall on Show Day at the end of Cup and Show Week.
What does Canterbury Anniversary Day commemorate?
The founding of the Canterbury settlement, marked by the arrival of the first of the Canterbury Association's First Four Ships at Lyttelton harbour on December 16, 1850. Those settlers established Christchurch.
Is Canterbury Anniversary Day the same as Show Day?
In practice yes. Locals usually call it Show Day because it falls on the final day of the Canterbury A&P Show. The formal name remains Canterbury Anniversary Day.
Does South Canterbury get the same day off?
No. South Canterbury, including Timaru, has its own anniversary day on the fourth Monday in September and works through the November Friday that north and mid Canterbury take off.
What happens during Cup and Show Week?
The New Zealand Trotting Cup is run at Addington on the Tuesday, racing continues through the week, and the Canterbury A&P Show runs an agricultural fair with livestock, equestrian and shearing competitions plus rides and race-day fashion.
Are shops open on Canterbury Anniversary Day?
Yes. New Zealand's shop trading restrictions apply to Christmas Day, Good Friday and Anzac Day morning, not to anniversary days, so stores, restaurants and attractions open for the long weekend.
