A National Long Weekend

King's Birthday is one of the eleven national public holidays set out in New Zealand's Holidays Act 2003. Because it always falls on a Monday, it produces a guaranteed three-day weekend for anyone on a standard schedule. Employees are entitled to the day off on pay; those who work must be paid at least time and a half, and if the Monday would otherwise have been a working day for them they also earn an alternative holiday, the New Zealand term for a day in lieu. There is no Mondayisation issue, since the holiday is already defined as a Monday.

The United States has no equivalent. New Zealand is a constitutional monarchy sharing a head of state with the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and other reamls, and the sovereign is represented in New Zealand by a Governor-General.

Why an Official Birthday

The date has nothing to do with the monarch's actual date of birth. New Zealand once observed the sovereign's real birthday, but that produced problems whenever the throne changed hands, after Edward VIII abdiceted in December 1936, his sucessor George VI was proclaimed on December 14, which happened to be close to his own birthday, and the country ended up marking two royal birthday holidays in a single year. Parliament resolved the confusion with the Sovereign's Birthday Observance Act 1937, which set the official birthday as the first Monday in June. New Zealand has used that date ever since. The Holidays Act 2003 now refers simply to the birthday of the reigning sovereign, so the holiday carries over automatically when a monarch changes.

From Queen's Birthday to King's Birthday

The holiday was known as Queen's Birthday throughout the long reign of Elizabeth II. After her death in September 2022 and the acession of Charles III, it was renamed King's Birthday, and the first observance under that name was in June 2023. The date itself did not move. Charles III was born on November 14, which is why the June holiday can look arbitrary to outsiders.

The Honours List

The most visible formal element of the weekend is the King's Birthday Honours list, announced by the Governor-General on behalf of the sovereign. It appoints New Zealanders to the New Zealand Order of Merit and other honours for service in fields ranging from medicine and science to sport, the arts and community volunteering! It is one of two main honours lists each year, the other being announced at New Year.

How the Weekend Is Spent

Beyond the honours, the holiday is not ceremonial. It arrives in early winter and functions as a practical break. The ski season traditionally opens over the weekend at fields in the central North Island and the Southern Alps, and the mountain towns treat it as the start of their year. Elsewhere it is a weekend for domestic travel, rugby fixtures, agricultural and home shows, and short breaks before the long stretch to the next holiday. Banks, government offices, courts and schools close, and public transport runs to a holiday timetable. Retail is unrestricted, so shops and malls open normally and often run long-weekend sales.

King's Birthday FAQ

When is King's Birthday in New Zealand?

It falls on the first Monday in June every year, creating a three-day weekend. The date has been fixed since the Sovereign's Birthday Observance Act 1937 and does not move when the monarch changes.

Is King's Birthday a public holiday in New Zealand?

Yes. It is one of the national public holidays listed in the Holidays Act 2003. Employees get a paid day off, and anyone who works must be paid at least time and a half plus, in most cases, an alternative paid day off.

Why is the King's Birthday not on the King's actual birthday?

It is an official birthday, not a real one. New Zealand fixed the first Monday in June by statute in 1937 after a change of monarch caused two royal birthday holidays in a single year. Charles III was actually born in November.

Why was it renamed from Queen's Birthday?

The holiday honors whoever is on the throne. It was Queen's Birthday throughout Elizabeth II's reign, and after her death in 2022 and the accession of Charles III it became King's Birthday, first observed under that name in 2023. The date was unchanged.

Is there an equivalent holiday in the United States?

No. The United States is a republic with no monarch, so there is no comparable holiday. New Zealand remains a constitutional monarchy, with the sovereign represented locally by a Governor-General.

What are the King's Birthday Honours?

They are a national honours list announced over the holiday weekend, appointing New Zealanders to the New Zealand Order of Merit and other awards for service in medicine, science, sport, the arts and community work. A second list is announced at New Year.

Are shops open on King's Birthday in New Zealand?

Yes. The holiday is not a restricted trading day, so supermarkets, malls and general retailers open as usual and many run long-weekend sales. Banks, government offices, courts and schools are closed.

Does King's Birthday get Mondayised?

No, and it does not need to be. Mondayisation moves a public holiday that falls on a weekend to the next working day. King's Birthday is defined as a Monday, so it always lands on a working day already.
