National public holiday December 25 Nationwide

Christmas Day, December 25, is a public holiday in every Australian state and territory — but it falls at the height of summer, so Australians celebrate with beach trips and backyard barbecues as often as roast dinners. When it lands on a weekend, an extra weekday holiday is added.

When 25 December falls on a Saturday an additional public holiday is held on Monday 27 December; when it falls on a Sunday, on Tuesday 27 December, Monday being Boxing Day. That applies in 2027 (Saturday). The weekend day remains a public holiday everywhere except, on the Act's wording, Tasmania.

A Midsummer Christmas

Christmas Day is observed in Australia on December 25, exactly as in the United States, and it is a public holiday in every state and territory. Australia has no federal holidays in the American sense — each state and territory government declares its own — but Christmas appears on every list, making it one of the handful of true nationwide days off. Banks, government offices and nearly all businesses close, and the National Employment Standards give workers the right to the day off or penalty-rate pay - the great difference from an American Christmas is the season: December is early summer in Australia, so the holiday arrives with 90-degre heat, school summer vacation and long daylight rather than snow.

How the Weekend Rule Works

When December 25 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the states add a substitute weekday so workers do not lose the day off — the same logic behind US federal holidays being observed on an adjacent Friday or Monday. If Christmas falls on a Saturday, the following Monday, December 27, becomes an additional public holiday; if it falls on a Sunday, the extra day is Tuesday, December 27, because the Monday is already Boxing Day. In most states the weekend date remains a public holiday as well, so Australians effectively get both days; Tasmania's Statutory Holidays Act instead names only the substitute weekday as the statutory holiday.

From Colonial Christmas to Carols by Candlelight

British settlers brought Christmas with the First Fleet in 1788, and colonial Australians spent a century atempting northern-hemisphere traditions — roast turkey, plum pudding, hot muled drinks — in midsummer heat. Distinctly Australian customs gradually emegred. Carols by Candlelight began in Melbourne in 1938, when radio anouncer Norman Banks organized an outdoor evening singalong; it is now a televised institution replicated in parks across the country, seafood has joined or replaced the roast on many tables, with fish markets famously packed in the days before Christmas, and the backyard barbecue is as traditional as turkey.

Christmas Day Today

Christmas morning follows a familiar pattern of gifts and church services — Christmas and Easter remain the biggest church-going days — before families head to lunches that stretch into pool and beach afternoons. Bondi Beach in Sydney is famous for its Christmas Day crowds of locals and travelers. Santa still comes, often depicted in board shorts or arriving by surfboat in coastal towns. Almost everything closes: December 25 is one of the very few days when major supermarkets, department stores and most restaurants shut nationwide, and public transportation runs reduced schedules.

The Day That Follows

The holiday season continues without pause: December 26 is Boxing Day, a separate public holiday in every state (South Australia observes Proclamation Day instead), bringing huge retail sales, the Boxing Day cricket Test in Melbourne and the start of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race. Together the two days give Australians a guaranteed midsummer break, typically bridging into a week of vacation before New Year's Day.

Christmas Day FAQ

Is Christmas Day a public holiday in Australia?

Yes. Every state and territory declares December 25 a public holiday, and the National Employment Standards give employees the right to the day off or penalty-rate pay if they work. It is one of the few days when nearly everything in Australia closes.

What happens when Christmas falls on a weekend in Australia?

An extra weekday public holiday is added: the following Monday when Christmas falls on a Saturday, or the Tuesday when it falls on a Sunday, since Monday is already Boxing Day. In most states the weekend date stays a holiday too.

Why do Australians celebrate Christmas in summer?

Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, so December 25 falls in early summer. The date is the same as everywhere else in the Christian calendar; only the season differs, which is why beach trips and barbecues sit alongside roast dinners.

What do Australians eat for Christmas dinner?

Many families still serve roast turkey, ham and plum pudding inherited from British tradition, but cold seafood — especially shrimp, which Australians call prawns — salads and barbecues are just as common in the summer heat. Pavlova is a favorite dessert.

What is Carols by Candlelight?

An outdoor evening carol concert tradition begun in Melbourne in 1938 by radio announcer Norman Banks. The flagship Melbourne event is televised nationally on Christmas Eve, and community versions are held in parks across the country.

Are stores open on Christmas Day in Australia?

Almost nothing opens. Supermarkets, department stores, banks and most restaurants close nationwide, and several states legally restrict trading on the day. Normal trading resumes with the Boxing Day sales on December 26.

Is Boxing Day also a holiday in Australia?

Yes. December 26 is a separate public holiday everywhere; South Australia calls it Proclamation Day. It is famous for retail sales, the Melbourne cricket Test and the start of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

Does Santa Claus visit Australia?

Of course — though he is often shown trading his sleigh for a surfboard. Australian children leave out cold drinks rather than hot cocoa, and coastal towns stage Santa arrivals by surf lifesaving boat.
