A holiday on a day most people already have off

Easter Saturday sits between Good Friday and Easter Sunday, and in most of Australia it is a formal public holiday — the equivalent of a U.S. state holiday. That sounds redundent for a Saturday, but in Australia it matters: retail, hospitality and health-care employees who work the day earn public holiday penalty rates, premium pay set by industrial awards, and workers whose normal schedule includes Saturday gain holiday entitlements. New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory all observe it. Western Australia and Tasmania do not, making this one of the clearast splits in Australia's holiday map.

How the date works

The holiday is simply the Saturday before Easter Sunday, so it moves with Easter anywhere from late March to late April - since it is defined by its position in Holy Week, it never needs an observed-date adjustment. The official name varies: Queensland's statute calls it "the day after Good Friday," Victoria's calls it "the Saturday before Easter Sunday," and most calendars just say Easter Saturday. Church calendars would call the day Holy Saturday — strictly speaking, "Easter Saturday" is the Saturday after Easter in liturigcal usage — but the everyday Australian name long ago won out.

Why states legislated a Saturday

Australia's Easter holidays desecnd from British and colonial law, which built a long break around Good Friday and Easter Monday. As Saturday trading became normal in the late twentieth century, the gap in the middle of the four-day weekend became an anomaly: a shop assistent could be required to work an ordinary Saturday shift in the middle of everyone else's holiday, the eastern states closed that gap by declaring the Saturday a public holiday, folding the whole stretch from Good Friday to Easter Monday into one protected break. Western Australia has moved to catch up — a bill before its Parliament in 2025 proposed adding Easter Saturday — but it had not become law as of 2026, and Tasmania instead keeps its own Easter Tuesday tradition for some workers.

What the day looks like

Easter Saturday is the practical shopping day of the Australian Easter weekend. Good Friday's strict trading rules shut most stores, and Easter Sunday trading is restricted in several states, so supermarkets and malls in the observing states typically open on the Saturday, staffed at holiday rates, and do heavy trade. Banks and government offices are closed as they would be on any Saturday, and the day is filled with football, autumn racing and Easter camping trips. In Western Australia and Tasmania it is legally an ordinary Saturday.

Notes for U.S. readers

The United States has no Easter public holidays at all, and no American state declares a holiday on a Saturday to trigger weekend pay — the concept of award penalty rates itself has no direct U.S. counterpart. The closest parallel is how some U.S. employers voluntarily pay premiums for holiday shifts; in Australia's observing states, that premium is a legal right on Easter Saturday.

Easter Saturday FAQ

Is Easter Saturday a public holiday in Australia?

In most of the country, yes. New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, the ACT and the Northern Territory declare it a public holiday. Western Australia and Tasmania do not.

Why is Easter Saturday a holiday if it is already a weekend?

The declaration mainly protects people who normally work Saturdays. Retail, hospitality and other weekend staff earn public holiday penalty rates, and the whole four-day Easter break gets consistent legal treatment.

Are shops open on Easter Saturday in Australia?

Mostly yes. It is the main shopping day of the Easter weekend because Good Friday trading is heavily restricted and Easter Sunday trading is limited in several states. Stores that open pay holiday rates in the observing states.

Why isn't Easter Saturday a holiday in Western Australia?

WA never added the Saturday to its holiday statute. Legislation proposed in 2025 would add it, but until that passes the day remains an ordinary Saturday in the state.

Is Easter Saturday the same as Holy Saturday?

It is the same day in the Australian sense. Church calendars call the day between Good Friday and Easter Sunday Holy Saturday, and technically reserve "Easter Saturday" for the Saturday after Easter, but Australian law and common usage apply the name to the earlier day.

What is Easter Saturday called in Queensland?

Queensland's holiday legislation officially lists it as "the day after Good Friday." Victoria uses "the Saturday before Easter Sunday." Both are the same day people commonly call Easter Saturday.

Does the United States have an Easter Saturday holiday?

No. No U.S. state or the federal government declares any Easter-related public holiday, and U.S. businesses treat the Saturday before Easter as a normal weekend day.
