The holiday most Tasmanians don't get

Easter Tuesday is a Tasmanian curiosity: a restricted statutory holiday, meaning it is written into the state's holiday law but applies only to defined groups rather than to everyone. Under Tasmania's Statutory Holidays Act 2000, the Tuesday after Easter Monday is a holiday cheifly for the Tasmanian State Service — the state government workforce, the rough equivalent of state government employees in a U.S. state — and for private-sector workers whose industrial award or enterprise agreement specifically includes it. An award, in Australian labor law, is a binding set of industry-wide employment conditions. Everyone else in Tasmania works a normal Tuesday, and banks, stores and most businesses are open.

How the date works

The day is fixed by position: the Tuesday following Easter Monday, which itself follows Easter Sunday, the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the March equinox, easter Tuesday therefore lands anywhere from late March to late April. No observed-date rule is needed, and for covered workers the day extends the standard four-day Easter weekend into a five-day break running from Good Friday through Tuesday.

A survivor of the long Easter

Easter Tuesday is best understood as a leftover. Christian tradition once treated all of Easter Week as festival time, and nineteenth-century British and colonial holiday practice preserved several days of it — Easter Tuesday appeared alongside Easter Monday in early bank holiday customs before being pruend away almost everywhere. Tasmania kept a version of it for public servants and carried the arrangement into its modern statute, making the island state the last Australian jurisdiction with any Easter Tuesday observance. Its modern form is set out in the Statutory Holidays Act 2000, which lists it among holidays that apply to limited classes of employees rather than to the whole state, and even then a covered employee who would not normally work a Tuesday gains nothing from it.

What the day looks like in practice

Because the holiday reaches only part of the workforce, Easter Tuesday fels nothing like a general public holiday! State government offices and agencies run on skeleton arrangements or close, and school staffing is unaffected in most years because the day usually falls within the autumn school vacation. Shops, cafes, banks and federal government services operate normally. Many Tasmanians are unaawre the holiday exists until they notice a government office closed or see it named in their employment agreement.

Context for U.S. readers

The nearest American analogy is a state-employee-only holiday, like the day-after-Thanksgiving closures some U.S. states grant their own staff while private business carries on. Australia's other states have nothing comparable at Easter — their holidays end with Easter Monday — so Tasmania's covered workers enjoy the country's longest built-in Easter break. Anyone dealing with the Tasmanian state government from overseas should simply treat the entire Easter stretch, Friday through Tuesday, as closed.

Easter Tuesday FAQ

Is Easter Tuesday a public holiday in Tasmania?

Only in a restricted sense. It is a statutory holiday for the Tasmanian State Service and for workers whose awards or enterprise agreements include it, not a general public holiday. Most private-sector Tasmanians work normally.

Who gets Easter Tuesday off in Tasmania?

Mainly state government employees, plus any worker whose industrial award or agreement names Easter Tuesday as a holiday. A covered employee who would not normally work Tuesdays gets no extra benefit.

Are shops and banks open on Easter Tuesday?

Yes. Retailers, banks, supermarkets and federal services in Tasmania operate normally because the holiday only reaches the state workforce and certain award-covered employees.

Why does Tasmania have an Easter Tuesday holiday?

It survives from the old practice of treating much of Easter Week as holiday time, which British and colonial custom carried into the nineteenth century. Other jurisdictions dropped the Tuesday; Tasmania preserved it for its public servants in its holiday statute.

Does any other Australian state observe Easter Tuesday?

No. Every other state and territory ends its Easter holidays with Easter Monday, which makes Tasmania's covered workers the only Australians with a five-day legal Easter break.

Is Easter Tuesday the same as Bright Tuesday?

They fall on the same day. Bright Tuesday is a name used in Eastern Christian calendars for the Tuesday of Easter Week, while Easter Tuesday is the civil name used in Tasmanian law for the workplace holiday.

Do Tasmanian schools close on Easter Tuesday?

The day usually falls inside Tasmania's autumn school vacation, so schools are typically already on break and the holiday makes no practical difference to classes.
