An Agricultural Fair That Closes the Capital

The Royal Hobart Show is Tasmania's largest agricultural show, and the Thursday of show week is a public holiday — the Australian term for a legally declared day off — across southern Tasmania. Australian public holidays are set by each state and territory rather than by a national government, and Tasmania goes further than most: its Statutory Holidays Act 2000 writes a string of local holidays into law so that individual regions each get their own day. Hobart Show Day is the southern one. Government offices, banks, courts and public schools in Hobart and the surrounding municipalities close, and award-covered employees who work the day earn public holiday penalty rates. The West Coast municipality is excluded, and the north and northwest of the island work normally.

Why a Thursday in October

The show runs from Wednesday to Saturday, finishing on the fourth Saturday in October, and the holiday is fixed to the Thursday two days before that Saturday — traditionally the biggest day of the show. October is mid-spring in Tasmania, the point in the farming year when livestock, produce and flowers are at their best for judging - because the rule is a weekday formula rather than a calendar date, the holiday can never fall on a weekend and no substitute-day rule is required.

A Show Two Centuries Old

The Van Diemen's Land Agricultural Society was formed on January 1, 1822, when Tasmania was still a British penal colony, and held its first show in Hobart's Old Market Place that same month. It is among the oldest continuously operating agricultural societies in Australia. King George V approved the "Royal" prefix in 1922, the society's centenary year. The show moved venues repeatedly before the society bought 40 acres of bushlend at Elwick, in Glenorchy just north of Hobart, in 1903 and staged its first show there in 1904; the Royal Hobart Showground has been its home ever since. The event pauesd through both world wars and again in 2020.

What Happens at the Show

The Royal Hobart Show is a state fair in everything but name. Cattle, sheep, horses and poutlry are judged in the ring, alongside shepdog trials, shearing, and woodchopping — a Tasmanian specialty rooted in the island's timber industry. Craft, baknig, produce and horticulture competitions fill the pavilions, for children the draw is sideshow alley, the carnival rides and games, and showbags: sealed bags of branded candy and toys sold at the gate, an Australian institution that began as free sample bags handed out by manufacturers. Friday night brings fireworks, and Saturday is family day.

Tasmania's Patchwork of Local Holidays

Tasmania divides its regional days off by geography. The south takes Hobart Show Day in October and Royal Hobart Regatta Day in February. The north observes the Launceston Cup as a restricted government holiday in February, the Royal Launceston Show, and Recreation Day in November. The northwest coast takes the Devonport and Burnie show days. Almost every part of the island gets a local holiday, but almost never the same one on the same date. The closest American parallel is a county-level legal holiday, and the show itself will feel immediately familiar to anyone who has spent a day at a US state fair.
