A day off for northern Tasmania only
The Royal Launceston Show holiday, generally called Launceston Show Day, is a regional public holiday in the Australian state of Tasmania. In Australia a public holiday works much like a US state holiday: government offices and schools close, and employees are entitled to a paid day off or penalty rates for working. What makes this one unusual to American eyes is how small its footprint is. Tasmania's Statutory Holidays Act 2000 names the covered municipalities exactly: Break O'Day, Dorset, George Town, Launceston, Meander Valley, Northern Midlands and West Tamar! Someone in Hobart, a few hours south, works a normal Thursday.
Why a Thursday in October
The date rule is the Thursday preceding the second Saturday in October, which puts the holiday on the traditional opening day of the agricultural show it is named for. Tasmania spreads a run of these show holidays across the spring, each tied to a different town's fair: Burnie takes the Friday before the first Saturday in October, Flinders Island the Friday before the third, and Hobart the Thursday before the fourth. Because the rule is a weekday formula rather than a fixed calendar date, the holiday always falls on a Thursday and never needs a substitute day.
A society founded in 1873
The Tasmanian Agricultural and Pastoral Society was formed in Launceston in June 1873 and held its first show that September at Invermay, on ground now occupied by York Park. The society renamed itself the National Agricultural and Pastoral Society of Tasmania in 1921, when it opened its competition classes to entrents from across the country, and the Royal prefix was approved in 1984. The show became a fixture of northern Tasmanian life: livestock and horse judging, wood chopping, produce and craft competitions, sideshow rides, and showbags, the sacsk of samples and candy Australian children collect much as American kids work a state fair midway.
A holiday that outlived its show
The event itself has had a dificult modern history - in December 2017 the society woudn the show up after a 144-year run, having lost its Inveresk showground lease to a University of Tasmania campus development while attendance fell from roughly 30,000 in earlier decades to about 9,000 in its final year. A revived show later ran at Carrick, west of the city, before financial losses forced further cancellations. The public holiday is unaffected by any of that: it is set by statutory formula rather than by whether an event is staged, so northern Tasmania keeps the Thursday off even in years with no show to attend.
What closes and what does not
Inside the seven municipalities, state government offices, courts, schools and banks close and public transport runs a holiday timetable. Tasmania does not restrict retail trading on show days, so supermarkets and shopping centers stay open and many run promotions. Employers apply whichever holiday matches the place the work is done, so a statewide business closes its Launceston branch in October while its Hobart office carries on.

Royal Launceston Show FAQ
Is Launceston Show Day a public holiday in all of Tasmania?
No. It is a regional public holiday listed in the Statutory Holidays Act 2000 and applies only in Break O'Day, Dorset, George Town, Launceston, Meander Valley, Northern Midlands and West Tamar. The rest of Tasmania, including Hobart, works normally.
What day of the week is the Royal Launceston Show holiday?
Always a Thursday. The rule is the Thursday preceding the second Saturday in October, which matches the traditional opening day of the show. Because it is defined by weekday, the holiday never lands on a weekend and never needs a substitute.
Why does Tasmania have so many show day holidays?
Tasmania is the Australian state that most consistently splits its holidays by district. Instead of one statewide fair day, each region gets a day off for its own agricultural show, and the Statutory Holidays Act 2000 lists the towns each one covers.
Is the holiday cancelled if the show does not go ahead?
No. The holiday is fixed by a date formula in state law, not by the staging of an event. Northern Tasmania has kept the Thursday off in years when the show was cancelled for financial reasons.
What is a showbag?
A showbag is a sealed bag of branded samples, candy and small toys sold at Australian agricultural shows. Buying showbags is a core part of the outing for children, and each year's lineup gets its own publicity in the local press.
Do stores close on Launceston Show Day?
Generally no. Tasmania does not impose retail trading restrictions on show day holidays, so supermarkets, malls and most shops open as usual. Government offices, courts, schools and banks in the covered municipalities do close.
Why is it called the Royal Launceston Show?
The organizing body began in 1873 as the Tasmanian Agricultural and Pastoral Society and became the National Agricultural and Pastoral Society of Tasmania in 1921. The Royal prefix was approved in 1984, and the show took the name with it.
Do employees get paid extra for working on show day?
Yes, in the covered municipalities. Australian public holiday entitlements apply, so employees who are rostered on generally receive penalty rates or a substitute day, depending on their award or agreement.
