A National Public Holiday

Good Friday is one of the eleven national public holidays listed in New Zealand's Holidays Act 2003. Every employee is entitled to the day off on pay. Anyone who does work must be paid at least time and a half, and if the day would otherwise have been a working day for them they also earn an alternative holiday, the New Zealand term for a day in lieu. Together with Easter Monday, which is also a public holiday, it turns Easter into a four-day weekend. Easter Sunday itself is not a public holiday, though shop trading on it is restricted.

The contrast with the United States is sharp. Good Friday is not a US federal holiday at all; only a dozen or so states close their offices, and the main national marker is that the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq shut for the day, in New Zealand the closure is universal and written into law.

How the Date Is Set

Good Friday is the Friday immediately before Easter Sunday, so it moves with the Easter cycle. Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after March 21, a formula fixed by the Council of Nicaea in 325 and refnied in the Gregorian calendar reform of 1582. That places Good Friday somewhere between March 20 and April 23. Because New Zealand is in the Southern Hemisphere, Easter arrives in autumn rather than spring, so the northern imagery of new grotwh and lamsb sits oddly against harvest and cooling weather.

Shops Must Close

Good Friday is one of only three and a half restricted trading days in the New Zealand year, alongside Christmas Day, Easter Sunday and the morning of Anzac Day. Under the Shop Trading Hours Act 1990, most retailers must remain shut, and an occupier who trades illegally can be fined. Exemptions cover dairies, service stations, pharmacies, takeaways, cafes, restaurants, garden centers on Easter Sunday and duty-free stores! Unlike Easter Sunday, Good Friday cannot be opened up by a local council policy, so the ban is genuinely nationwide. Liquor sales are also restricted, with bars able to serve only alongside meals.

How It Is Observed

Churches hold Good Friday services, Stations of the Cross processions and ecumenical walks, and hot cross buns are sold in vast quantities from well before the day. Beyond the religious observance, the long weekend is one of the busiest domestic travel periods of the year: families head to baches and cribs, the holiday cottages of the north and south islands, while campgrounds and national parks fill. Police run a national road-saftey operation across the whole Easter weekend. Public transport runs to holiday timetables, and banks, schools, government offices and courts are closed.

A Long Easter Break

Because Good Friday and Easter Monday are both statutory days off, and because Anzac Day on April 25 often lands nearby, many New Zealanders string the two together into an extended autumn break. School holidays are commonly scheduled to overlap, making Easter the second-largest travel peak after Christmas.

Good Friday FAQ

Is Good Friday a public holiday in New Zealand?

Yes. It is one of the national public holidays set out in the Holidays Act 2003, so employees across the country are entitled to a paid day off. Those who work it must be paid at least time and a half plus, in most cases, an alternative paid day off.

Are shops open on Good Friday in New Zealand?

Mostly no. Good Friday is a legally restricted trading day, so supermarkets, malls and general retailers must close. Dairies, service stations, pharmacies, cafes, restaurants and duty-free shops are exempt and can trade.

Why does Good Friday change date every year?

It is tied to Easter, which falls on the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after March 21. That lunar formula, set at the Council of Nicaea, means Good Friday can land anywhere from late March to late April.

Is Good Friday a holiday in the United States?

No. Good Friday is not a US federal holiday. Roughly a dozen states close state offices, and the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq close, but the post office, banks and federal offices operate normally.

Can a New Zealand council allow shops to open on Good Friday?

No. Local councils can adopt a policy allowing Easter Sunday trading in their district, but that power does not extend to Good Friday, Christmas Day or Anzac Day morning. Those closures apply nationwide.

Is Easter Monday also a public holiday in New Zealand?

Yes. Easter Monday is a separate national public holiday, so Good Friday and Easter Monday together give New Zealand a four-day Easter weekend. Easter Sunday is not a public holiday.

Can you buy alcohol on Good Friday in New Zealand?

Only in limited circumstances. Off-licence sales such as bottle stores and supermarket wine aisles are prohibited, and licensed premises may serve alcohol only to people who are dining or staying on site.

Why is Easter in autumn in New Zealand?

New Zealand is in the Southern Hemisphere, where the seasons are reversed. Easter falls in March or April, which is mid-autumn there, so the northern symbolism of spring and rebirth does not match the local weather.
