An Observance, Not a Public Holiday

Easter Sunday sits in an unusual legal position in New Zealand. It is not one of the national public holidays listed in the Holidays Act 2003, so employees earn no statutory day off, no time and a half and no alternative holiday for working it. In that respect it matches the United States, where Easter Sunday is likewise not a federal holiday. What makes New Zealand different is shop trading law: Easter Sunday is one of only three and a half days a year on which most retailers are legally required to close.

The days on either side are public holidays - good Friday and Easter Monday are both statutory days off, so most workers get a four-day weekend with Easter Sunday in the middle of it. The Sunday is the only part of that stretch with no employment entitlement attached.

Why the Date Moves

Easter Sunday falls on the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after March 21. The rule was settled at the Council of Nicaea in 325 and later adjusted by the Gregorian calendar reform of 1582, and it places Easter between March 22 and April 25. Because New Zealand is in the Southern Hemisphere, this lands in autumn, with harvest and shortening days rather than the spring imagery of the northern tradition.

The Trading Rules and the 2016 Change

Under the Shop Trading Hours Act 1990, shops must close on Christmas Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and until 1 p.m. on Anzac Day. Exempt businesses can still open, including dairies, service stations, pharmacies, takeaways, cafes and restaurants, duty-free stores, souvenir shops and, on Easter Sunday specifically, garden centers. Trading illegally expsoes the shop occupier to a fine.

The rules changed in 2016. Under the Shop Trading Hours Amendment Act, Parliament handed the decision to local councils, which may now adopt a policy allowing shops in the whole district or in defined areas to open on Easter Sunday, after a formal public consultasion. The result is a patchwork: some councils allow full trading, some allow it only in tourist zones, and others have left the ban in place, alongside the change, shop employees were given a protected right to refuse Easter Sunday work without having to give a reason and without being penelized for it.

How It Is Observed

Easter Sunday is the most significant day in the Christian calendar, and New Zealand churches hold dawn services, morning worship and family gatherings. Beyond the religious observance, the day is dominated by chocolate. Easter egg hunts run in parks, gardens and homes; the local twist is the chocolate Easter buny competing with the chocolate kiwi and, in some years, campaigns to replace the bunny altogether because introduced rabbits are a serious agricultural pest. Alcohol sales are also restricted, with licensed premises able to serve only diners and residents. With most shops shut, families spend the middle day of the long weekend at baches, campgrounds and beaches.

Easter Sunday FAQ

Is Easter Sunday a public holiday in New Zealand?

No. Easter Sunday is not listed as a public holiday in the Holidays Act 2003, so employees get no statutory day off, no time and a half and no alternative holiday for working. Good Friday and Easter Monday, on either side of it, are public holidays.

Are shops open on Easter Sunday in New Zealand?

It depends on the district. Easter Sunday is a restricted trading day by default, but since a 2016 law change local councils can adopt a policy allowing shops in their area to open. Exempt businesses such as dairies, service stations, pharmacies and cafes can trade anywhere.

What changed with Easter Sunday trading in New Zealand?

The Shop Trading Hours Amendment Act 2016 moved the decision from central government to territorial authorities. Councils can now permit Easter Sunday trading across a whole district or in defined areas after a formal public consultation process.

Can shop workers refuse to work on Easter Sunday?

Yes. New Zealand shop employees have a statutory right to turn down Easter Sunday work without giving a reason, and an employer cannot treat them badly for exercising it. Both sides must follow the notice requirements set out in the law.

Why does Easter Sunday change date every year?

Easter is calculated from a lunar rule rather than a fixed date. It falls on the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after March 21, which places it between late March and late April.

Is Easter Sunday a holiday in the United States?

No. Easter Sunday is not a US federal holiday. It falls on a Sunday, so most offices are closed anyway, but there is no legal entitlement and no trading restrictions like New Zealand's.

Can you buy alcohol on Easter Sunday in New Zealand?

Only in limited ways. Bottle stores and supermarket alcohol sales are prohibited, and licensed premises may serve alcohol only to people who are dining there or staying on the premises.

How is Easter Sunday celebrated in New Zealand?

Churches hold dawn and morning services, and families gather for egg hunts and chocolate. Because it sits in the middle of a four-day weekend, many people spend the day at the beach, a campground or a bach rather than at home.
