Same Sunday as the United States

Father's Day in the United Kingdom is celebrated on the third Sunday in June, exactly the same day as in the United States. It is an observance, not a bank holiday — the British term for a public holiday — so no banks, schools or offices close, and because it always falls on a Sunday, few people would be at work anyway. For American families with relatives in Britain, this is one of the easiest holidays to coordinate: the same card-and-phone-call date works on both sides of the Atlantic. That is not true of the mothers' equivalent, since the UK honors mothers on Mothering Sunday in March, while the US Mother's Day falls in May.

An American import

Unlike Mothering Sunday, which grew out of centuries-old English church custom, Father's Day is an American invention that crossed the Atlantic. The idea is credited to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, who wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children alone, she organized the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane in June 1910, inspired by the success of Anna Jarvis's Mother's Day campaign. The observance spread slowly in the United States, gaining presidential support from Calvin Coolidge in 1924 and Lyndon Johnson in 1966 before Richard Nixon signed it into permanent national observance in 1972.

British retailers and card publishars picked up the custom in the decades after World War II, when American products, movies and marketing reached deep into UK life. By the second half of the twentieth century the third Sunday in June was firmly established across Britain, with no act of Parliament involved. It remains a commercial and family occasion with no official status.

How British families mark the day

Celebrations look much like those in the United States: greeting cards, small gifts, breakfast in bed and family meals! A Sunday roast at home or at a pub is the classic British choice, and pubs, restaurants and garden centers count the day among their busiest of the summer. Craft-made cards from children, socks, tools and whisky feature heavily in UK gift statitsics complied by retailers. Churches may include praeyrs for fathers, but the day has no formal religious liturgy.

What is open and closed

Because Father's Day is a Sunday observance rather than a bank holiday, normal Sunday rules apply. Large stores in England and Wales trade on restricted Sunday hours as they do every week, banks and government offices are closed as on any Sunday, and there is no extra day off on Monday. In this it matches the United States, where Father's Day is likewise a permanent national observance rather than a federal holiday that closes anything.

The same third-Sunday date is used in Ireland, Canada and many other countries, so most of the English-speaking world celebrates together. Australia and New Zealand are the notable exceptions, holding Father's Day on the first Sunday in September.

Father's Day FAQ

Is Father's Day the same day in the UK and the US?

Yes. Both countries celebrate Father's Day on the third Sunday in June, so cards and calls line up perfectly. Mother's Day differs, though: the UK marks Mothering Sunday in Lent, weeks before the US date.

Is Father's Day a bank holiday in the UK?

No. It is an observance with no official status, and since it always falls on a Sunday there is no day off attached. Banks, offices and schools follow their normal Sunday schedules.

Where did Father's Day come from?

It began in the United States. Sonora Smart Dodd organized the first celebration in Spokane, Washington in 1910 to honor her father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children alone. The custom later spread to Britain.

When did Father's Day become popular in Britain?

It caught on in the decades after World War II, driven by retailers and card publishers rather than by any law or church decree. By the later twentieth century the third Sunday in June was standard across the UK.

Do stores and restaurants open on Father's Day in the UK?

Yes. Normal Sunday trading rules apply, so large stores in England and Wales open for restricted Sunday hours and restaurants and pubs are busy. Booking a table for a Father's Day roast is strongly advised.

Is Father's Day the same date everywhere in the world?

No. Ireland, Canada, the UK and the US share the third Sunday in June, but Australia and New Zealand celebrate on the first Sunday in September, and many European countries use other dates entirely.

How do British families celebrate Father's Day?

Much as Americans do: greeting cards, small gifts, breakfast in bed and a family meal. The traditional centerpiece is a Sunday roast at home or at a pub, and retailers report cards, socks and whisky as the classic gifts.
