A Sunday observance, not a day off

Father's Day falls on the third Sunday in June and honors fathers, grandfathers, stepfethers and father figures. Like Mother's Day, it is a national observance established by presidential proclamation and federal statute rather than a federal holiday, and because it always lands on a Sunday, the question of paid leave never arises. Government offices, banks and markets are closed for the weekend as usual, and there is no regular mail delivery. The day's footprint shows up instead in packed restaurants, greeting-card aisles and long-distance phone calls.

Why the third Sunday in June

The date traces directly to the first celebration in Spokane, Washington, held on June 19, 1910, the third Sunday of that June. Organizer Sonora Smart Dodd had originally proposed June 5, her father's birthday, but local clergy needed more time to preapre seromns, so the third Sunday stuck! When Congress and the White House later formalized the observance, they kept the Sunday rule, which means the date moves each year but the day of the week never does.

From a Spokane church service to federal recognition

Sonora Smart Dodd was listaning to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909 when she resolved that fathers deserved the same honor. Her own father, William Jackson Smart, was a Civil War veteran who had raised six children alone after his wife died in childbirth. With support from the Spokane Ministerial Alliance and the local YMCA, the first citywide Father's Day was celebrated across Spokane churches in 1910. An earlier, one-time service had been held in Fairmont, West Virginia, in 1908 to honor fathers after the Monongah mining disaster, but it did not become an annual event. National recognition came slowly. President Woodrow Wilson marked the day in 1916 and President Calvin Coolidge endorsed it in 1924, yet Congress resisted for decades, partly out of concern the day would be swallowed by advertising. President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation designating the third Sunday in June in 1966, and in 1972 President Richard Nixon signed the law that made Father's Day a permanent national observance - dodd, often called the Mother of Father's Day, lived to see it, dying in 1978 at age 96.

How Americans celebrate

The classic pattern is a family meal, a card and a gift, with cookouts, fishing trips and ballgames close behind. Restaurants report Father's Day as one of the busiest days of the year, and retailers promote tools, grills, electronics and sporting goods in the weeks before. The National Retail Federation consistently measures Father's Day spending in the billions of dollars, though below Mother's Day. Churches often recognize fathers in Sunday services, continuing the day's original setting.

Around the English-speaking world

Canada and the United Kingdom celebrate Father's Day on the same third Sunday in June as the United States, so cross-border families share the date. Australia and New Zealand instead observe it on the first Sunday in September, their early spring. In every case it is an observance rather than a public holiday, so no offices close anywhere.

Father's Day FAQ

Is Father's Day a federal holiday?

No. Father's Day is a national observance set by presidential proclamation and a 1972 law, not a federal holiday. It always falls on a Sunday, so government offices, banks and markets are closed only because of the weekend.

Why is Father's Day on the third Sunday in June?

The first celebration in Spokane, Washington, was held on the third Sunday of June in 1910. Organizer Sonora Smart Dodd had suggested her father's birthday in early June, but clergy needed extra time to prepare sermons, and the third Sunday became the tradition.

Who started Father's Day?

Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, organized the first citywide Father's Day in 1910 to honor her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran who raised six children as a single parent. A one-time service in Fairmont, West Virginia, in 1908 preceded it but did not continue.

When did Father's Day become official?

President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first proclamation designating the third Sunday in June in 1966, and President Richard Nixon signed the law making the observance permanent in 1972, more than fifty years after Mother's Day gained the same status.

Is there mail delivery on Father's Day?

No regular mail is delivered because Father's Day always falls on a Sunday, when the Postal Service does not make ordinary deliveries. Priority Mail Express, delivered every day of the year, still arrives.

Are restaurants busy on Father's Day?

Yes. Industry surveys regularly rank Father's Day among the busiest restaurant days of the year, with steakhouses and barbecue spots in especially high demand. Reservations for dinner are strongly recommended.

Do other countries celebrate Father's Day on the same day?

Canada, the United Kingdom and Ireland use the same third Sunday in June as the United States. Australia and New Zealand celebrate on the first Sunday in September, and many European countries tie the day to St. Joseph's Day in March.

What is the difference between Father's Day and Mother's Day?

Both are Sunday observances rather than legal holidays. Mother's Day, on the second Sunday in May, was recognized by Congress in 1914, while Father's Day waited until a proclamation in 1966 and a permanent law in 1972.
