One city's day at the fair
Royal Queensland Show Day is a public holiday in the Australian state of Queensland, but only inside the City of Brisbane local government area. Almost everyone calls it Ekka People's Day, or just the Ekka holiday. In Australia a public holiday functions like a US state holiday: government offices and schools close and employees get a paid day off or penalty rates for working. Queensland does not set one fair day for the whole state, instead each local council picks the day of its own agricultural show, so a Brisbane worker takes a Wednesday in August while councils elsewhere in the state take their show day anywhere from March to October.
How the date is worked out
The holiday falls on the Wednesday of the Royal Queensland Show, which is the Wednesday on or after August 10. The show opens on the first Friday in August unless that Friday falls before August 5, in which case it opens on the second Friday; People's Day is the Wednesday that follows. That formula keeps the holiday inside the show's run every year and, because it is set by weekday rather than a fixed date, it never needs a substitute day. Neighboring councils such as Logan, Ipswich, Lockyer Valley and Scenic Rim deliberately schedule their own show holidays on other dates to avoid piling every south-east Queensland family into the showgrounds at once.
From the 1876 Brisbane Exhibition
The show was first held in 1876 by the body now known as the Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland, or RNA. It was originally the Brisbane Exhibition, which Queenslanders shortened to Ekka, and the nickname stuck so thoroughly that the official name is rarely used. The association gained its royal title in 1920 with the permision of the visiting Prince of Wales! The show has been called off only a handful of times in its history, including during the 1919 influenza pandemic, in 1942 during the Second World War, and in 2020 and 2021 because of COVID-19.
What People's Day looks like
The Ekka runs for about ten days at the Brisbane Showgrounds in Bowen Hills and draws crowds in the hundreds of thousands. It is the one week of the year when rural Queensland comes to the capital: cattle and sheep judging, woodchopping, showjmuping, dog trials and produce displays sit alongside carnival rides, an evening fireworks program and sideshow alley. Two traditions dominate the merchendising. Showbags, sealed bags of branded samples and candy, are bought by the armolad, and the strawberry sunade sold by dairy farmers has been an Ekka institution since 1950.
Where the holiday does and does not apply
Only the Brisbane City Council area gets the Wednesday off, and the boundary matters: a business in Brisbane closes while one a short drive away in another council area does not. Within Brisbane, state and local government offices, schools and banks close and public transport runs extra services to Bowen Hills. Retail trading is not restricted, so shops and restaurants stay open and trade heavily on the extra weekday of foot traffic.

Royal Queensland Show Day (Brisbane) FAQ
Is Ekka People's Day a public holiday for all of Queensland?
No. It is a public holiday only in the Brisbane City Council area. Every other Queensland council nominates its own show holiday tied to its local agricultural show, so the dates vary widely across the state.
Why is the Ekka holiday always on a Wednesday?
The holiday is fixed to the Wednesday of the show's run, which is the Wednesday on or after August 10. Because it is defined by weekday it always lands midweek and never needs a substitute day.
What does Ekka mean?
It is Queensland slang, a shortening of Exhibition. The event began in 1876 as the Brisbane Exhibition, and the nickname became so common that the show is now marketed under it alongside its formal name.
What is People's Day?
People's Day is the traditional name for the Wednesday of the Royal Queensland Show, the day the public holiday is granted so Brisbane families can attend. It is the show's biggest single day of attendance.
Do banks and schools close on Ekka Wednesday?
Yes, within the Brisbane area. Banks, schools, courts and state and local government offices close, and public transport adds services to the showgrounds. Outside Brisbane they operate normally.
Are stores open during the Ekka holiday?
Yes. Queensland does not restrict retail trading on show holidays, so shops, malls, restaurants and supermarkets open as usual. Many trade well because of the extra weekday crowds in the city.
What is a showbag?
A showbag is a sealed bag of branded samples, candy and small toys sold at Australian shows. The Ekka's lineup is announced each year and buying them is a central part of the day out for families.
Has the Ekka ever been cancelled?
Yes, but rarely. The show did not run during the 1919 influenza pandemic, in 1942 during the Second World War, or in 2020 and 2021 during COVID-19. The public holiday itself is set by date formula in the state calendar.
