The one anniversary day that is not a Monday
Southland Anniversary Day is a regional public holiday in New Zealand. Each of the provinces that existed before 1876 kept a founding anniversary as a day off, and only the region concerned takes it. Southland's covers Invercargill, Gore, Bluff, the Catlins, Fiordland and Stewart Island. There, schools, banks, council and government offices close, and employees are entitled to a paid day off or, if they work, at least time and a half plus an alternative holiday, the New Zealand term for a day in lieu. What makes Southland unusual is the day of the week: every other region takes its anniversary on a Monday, and Southland takes its on a Tuesday.
Why Easter Tuesday
The anniversary is listed on the calendar as January 17, but Southland has not taken the day off on that date in living memory, instead it is attached to Easter. Good Friday and Easter Monday are already national public holidays, so adding the Tuesday gives the province a continuous five-day break from Friday through Tuesday, the longest run of consecutive days off anywhere in New Zealand. The arrangement was an informal local custom for decades while official calendars still listed the older date, and it was formally settled in December 2011. Because Easter moves, so does the holiday, landing anywhere from late March to late April.
How Southland became a province
Southland was part of Otago until settlers in the far south began petitoining for separation in 1857, arguing that revenue raised from their land was being spent in Dunedin and that the district needed its own port, roads and administration. Parliament passed the New Provinces Act in 1858, allowing outliyng districts to break away, and the Province of Southland was created in 1861 with Invercargill as its capital. Dr James Alexander Robertson Menzies, a Scottish-born physciian and runhloder, became its first superintendent. The experiment did not last! Southland borrowed heavily to build a railway from Invercargill to Bluff and other public works, while Otago grew rich on the Central Otago gold rush that began the same year. Saddled with debt, Southland rejonied Otago in 1870, and all the provinces were abolished six years later. The holiday outlived both.
The long weekend today
Easter falls in autumn in the Southern Hemisphere, and the Southland break is a fixture of the regional calendar. It is a traditional time for the first serious hunting and fishing trips of the season, for boats out of Bluff and Riverton, and for tramping in Fiordland before the weather turns. Invercargill and Gore run community events, and the break lines up neatly with the end of the school term. Trading rules are the one complication: shops must close on Good Friday and Easter Sunday under national law, and Anzac Day morning is restricted, but Easter Monday and Easter Tuesday carry no restrictions, so retailers reopen for the last two days of the run. For an American reader the effect is a little like a state holiday bolted onto a national one, producing a break no other part of the country gets.

Southland Anniversary Day FAQ
When is Southland Anniversary Day?
It falls on the Tuesday after Easter, so the date moves each year with Easter and can land anywhere from late March to late April. It is the only New Zealand anniversary day observed on a Tuesday.
Why is Southland Anniversary Day at Easter?
Attaching it to Easter joins the holiday to Good Friday and Easter Monday, giving the region an unbroken five-day break. The local custom ran informally for decades and was formally confirmed in December 2011.
What does Southland Anniversary Day commemorate?
The founding of Southland as a province in its own right in 1861, after settlers in the far south petitioned to separate from Otago under the New Provinces Act of 1858.
Which areas get Southland Anniversary Day off?
The Southland region, including Invercargill, Gore, Bluff, the Catlins, Fiordland and Stewart Island. Otago, immediately north, takes its own anniversary day in March.
Is Easter Tuesday a public holiday in the rest of New Zealand?
No. Good Friday and Easter Monday are national public holidays, but the Tuesday is a public holiday only in Southland, where it serves as the regional anniversary day.
Is Southland Anniversary Day a paid holiday?
Yes, for employees working in the region. If the day would otherwise have been a working day it is paid, and anyone who works it earns at least time and a half plus an alternative holiday.
Are shops open on Southland Anniversary Day?
Yes. Shops must close on Good Friday and Easter Sunday under national law, but there is no restriction on Easter Monday or Easter Tuesday, so retailers trade normally on the anniversary day.
Why did Southland stop being a province?
It borrowed heavily for railways and other public works while neighbouring Otago prospered from the gold rush. Unable to service the debt, Southland rejoined Otago in 1870, and all provinces were abolished in 1876.
